Description: There are things that you cannot see because your eyes only detect the light that comes from objects in the specific range of colors that are part of visible light. However there are some materials in our world are fluorescent. When you shine a black light upon them then they will glow back a bright color that was not there before.

Description: Interstitial laser photo coagulation is a promising treatment modality that utilizes an optically-induced temperature rise to thermally destroy tumors. One of the challenges of this therapy is its dynamic nature, as tissue properties (optical, thermal, blood flow, etc) change during therapy, hence making pre-treatment planning very challenging. This added complexity necessitates the use of real-time, on-line feedback. Here, we propose the use of interstitial optical fiber sensors for this purpose, and describe a methodology for determining their in-situ position. This should ensure high-quality feedback data for ILP treatment optimization.

Description: Biophotonics is an exciting field that utilizes light to image, detect and cure disease plus help us learn about basic biological processes. The field is possible because of the way in which different forms of light interact differently with living tissues. Instruments like pulse oxymeters can shine light through your finger and figure out how oxygenated your blood is! Other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum can tell you different types of information. Fluorescence is also a very popular technique for labeling components of cells to better understand how they function. This handout helps explain the basic concepts in straightforward language.
