eye and face under near infrared light

Description: Here you see the picture of an eye as seen under near infrared light. The brown eye is seen as light in color as it reflects the near infrared (800-1200 nanometers). A blue eye would appear darker as it is more transparent to those wavelengths

Why Biophotonics Possible Handout

Description: Biophotonics is an exciting field that utilizes light to image, detect and cure disease plus help us learn about basic biological processes. The field is possible because of the way in which different forms of light interact differently with living tissues. Instruments like pulse oxymeters can shine light through your finger and figure out how oxygenated your blood is! Other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum can tell you different types of information. Fluorescence is also a very popular technique for labeling components of cells to better understand how they function. This handout helps explain the basic concepts in straightforward language.
