Research Fellows in Medical Photonics/Science

We are seeking individuals who will develop independent research programmes and engage
in translational research in the biomedical photonics sector. Involvement in undergraduate
and postgraduate teaching appropriate to the Fellows’ area(s) of expertise will be
encouraged. A strong background at postdoctoral level in appropriate areas of photonics
and biomedicine, and a good publication record, are required.

Research

Interdisciplinary research has come to the fore in recent years and many major problems in
science require teams of researchers to address key fundamental issues. Photonics is
recognised as one of the strengths of Scottish Universities and particularly in the University
of St Andrews, which has an international and growing presence in the medical photonics
field.

These posts are available for up to 5 years, with formal review of performance at the end of
the first 3 years. You will be expected to develop independent research programmes that will
complement existing activity involving medical and biophotonics collaborations (see

Representative Work Activities

  • Design, develop and deliver research proposals and projects
  • Develop and implement new concepts and ideas to extend intellectual understanding
  • Develop and implement appropriate methodologies and techniques which add to the knowledge/understanding of the discipline
  • Identify sources of funding and contribute to the process of securing funds
  • Develop ideas for generating income, promoting the research area and for application of research outcomes eg commercial and consultancy activities
  • Write and publish research findings
  • Deliver presentations at conferences, seminars, symposia etc.
  • Manage/monitor research budgets
  • May be required to undertake operational management activities for the research team
  • Actively participate in research meetings with collaborators and PIs to discuss direction of the research, problem solve, advance thinking etc
  • Develop a wide range of contacts and actively participate in internal and external networks to form relationships for future collaboration, obtain research consultancy programmes etc
  • Plan, manage and monitor the work of others including supervising, training or teaching students
  • Provide advice, guidance and support to other members of the research team
  • Possess sufficient breadth/depth of specialist knowledge and experience in the
    discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies
