Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Draper Laboratory is a research and development laboratory, employing more than 850 engineers, scientists, and technicians on a broad array of programs for government and commercial sponsors among its 1,384 employees. The Laboratory’s unparalleled expertise in the areas of guidance, navigation, and control systems remains its greatest resource. Draper is among the leaders in fault-tolerant computing, reliable software development, modeling and simulation, and MEMS technology. It applies its expertise to a broad range of domains, including autonomous air, land, sea, and space systems; information integration; distributed sensors and networks; precision-guided munitions; air traffic flow management; military logistics; and biomedical engineering and chemical/biological defense.

Job Responsibilities:

This person will be responsible for leading a research program focused on developing optics (photonics/ plasmonics) and imaging technologies for medical and biological applications. The person will interface directly with clinicians and biologists and translate requirements into a collaborative technical and programmatic plan suitable for a sponsor. He/She will lead technology development for new MEMS and microelectronics driven photonic and imaging programs. These tasks will be carried out as collaborations with interdisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers, both local and off-site.

Key Experience/Capabilities:

Significant experience in photonics (plasmonics), general optics and metamaterials applied to medical/biological problems. The person must have a thorough understanding of MEMS processes and optics/photonics fundamentals. The successful candidate will be able to identify and pursue specific opportunities of maximum biological/clinical utility, instead of technological value alone.
