Postdoc/Graduate Assistant position of: Biological & Biomedical Engineering Electrical Engineering Physics

Penn State-Lehigh Inter-University Center for Optical Technologies

Bethlehem, PA 18015

Postdoctoral positions are available in the research team of Professor Alberto Bilenca, at the Penn State-Lehigh Inter-University Center for Optical Technologies (COT). COT’s role as a leading research institute and close partnerships between Lehigh University and Pennsylvania State University provide an outstanding environment for developing cutting edge optical technologies with applications in biology and medicine. In the first project, biomedical optical nanometrology systems will be developed for studying biological and medical structure and function at the nanoscale. In the second project, the use of optical coherent and scattering effects in disordered media will be investigated to advance tumor and blood diseases diagnosis. A PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Physics, Chemistry, Bioengineering or a related field is required. The successful candidate must have a strong drive to succeed in biomedical photonics research and should bring strong experience, enthusiasm and dedication to the team. For the first position, important areas of expertise are: design and development of optical microscopy/imaging systems, micro/nano fabrication, programming for measurement and automation (especially, LabView, C++ and Matlab), and work with biological systems (especially, cells, proteins, and membranes). For the second position, relevant expertise includes: knowledge in tissue optics, design and development of optical imaging systems, and signal processing. However, outstanding candidates with strong experience in other areas of optics and photonics are also welcome to apply. The positions are available immediately and are initially for one year, with the likely extension for several years by mutual agreement. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until positions are filled; however, for full consideration, please submit materials by November 1st, 2009.
