DESCRIPTION:The number of images that are sensed\, stored and displayed d
igitally continues to increase dramatically in virtually every imaging s
ystem from video endoscopes and digital phones to digital cameras to rem
ote-sensing satellites and astronomical telescopes. A major important fe
ature of digital images is that they lend themselves to various processi
ng techniques that can be used to enhance the visual appearance\, to ext
ract important information automatically\, to format for data storage an
d transmission and to optimize the image data for display. Optical syste
m design can no longer be confined merely to exploiting the physics of l
ight but must also include the processing of digital information.\n\nThe
Digital Image Processing and Analysis (DIPA) meeting will provide a for
um for forefront research on various topics related to digital image pro
cessing and analysis. Included in the topics reported at this meeting ar
 e the latest advances in image segmentation\, analysis\, compression\, r
 econstruction and quality assessment\, pattern/target recognition\, and
applications of image analysis to visual and industrial applications suc
h as manufactured product inspection\, to mention a few. Results from st
udies in using digital imagery to extract tomographic\, volumetric\, tim
e resolved\, and super-resolved imagery information are also within the
scope of papers to be presented.\n
